oafers
is an established bar in the Douglas Street area of Cork and has been
serving the local gay and lesbian community for over 20 years. It is
popular also with visitors to Cork as it provides a comfortable and
friendly environment for all who walk through the door. The mention
of Loafers in any conversation will without a doubt be a positive one
as it is one of Irelands leading LGBT bars and has been a major focus
point for the growing Cork Gay Community for many years. Just ask one
of our many regulars!!
The premises itself is located in one of Corks historic streets, Douglas
Street, which was once a centre of monastic and commercial activity.
The structural remains of ancient abbeys and churches coupled with past
reminders of day to day life from the 17th century to the present day
dot the area. The bar is adjacent to White Street which was a commercial
hive for many centuries housing the Bowling Green Market where salt,
spices, and various exotic foods were bought and sold. The Presentation
Convent is also located on Douglas Street. In this famous institution
lies the grave of one of Corks favourite daughters Nano Nagle, whose
work with Corks sick and destitute is remembered to this day.
Loafers bar is often described as “the centre of the Cork gay community”.
It has continued to trade very successfully for many years and has hosted
many groundbreaking events in the history of gay Cork. The pub is centrally
involved in Cork Gay Pride and is the main focus of the long running
Cork Women’s Fun Weekend which draws hundreds of women from Ireland
and abroad to this 4 day annual event.
Loafers location is one of the apexes in Corks “Pink Triangle”. LinC
( Lesbians in Cork) which is a community centre for LBT women is literally
a stones throw from the front door and has enjoyed a long running relationship
with the pub. The area had seen an influx of gay and lesbian tenants
and householders in the last 5 years as a result of the resources available
to the gay community in the area.
